The back of the plate is glazed with homemade milk. This is an old eco-friendly technique which closes the pores of ceramics and makes it water repellent.
Milk glazing gives the product nice vintage look and makes it pleasant to touch.
Not suitable for dishwasher, though, since it may be damaged by steam or high temperature water.
